Keeping Your Denver Home Safe: A Neighbor’s Guide to Garage Door Security
Hi, I’m Randy Krouse, owner of Metro Denver Garage Door. As a retired police officer and a long-time member of this community, your family’s safety is my top priority. I’ve spent my career protecting homes, and now I bring that same commitment to every garage door we service.
Lately, there’s been some talk in the news and online about a new trend of garage door vandalism. It’s natural to feel a little concerned when you hear things like that. I want to take a moment to share some straightforward advice—neighbor to neighbor—on how to keep your home secure and give you peace of mind.
A Calm Look at a New Concern
You may have seen stories about teenagers damaging garage doors for social media stunts. While it’s a frustrating and senseless trend, it’s also an opportunity to think about our home’s biggest door. In my years on the force, I learned that most problems can be prevented with a little bit of awareness and some simple, proactive steps.
Instead of worrying about the “what ifs,” let’s focus on the practical things we can do right now to make our homes even safer. A strong, well-maintained garage door is one of the best and easiest ways to protect your home and family.

Is Your Garage Door as Strong as It Looks?
The most important factor in garage door security is the material it’s made from. Some older or more basic doors, especially those made of thin fiberglass, can be vulnerable to damage. They might look fine, but they don’t always stand up well to impact.
This is why I almost always recommend materials like steel or solid wood. Here’s a simple breakdown:
| Material | Security & Durability | Why We Recommend It |
| Steel | High | A steel door is your best all-around choice for security. It’s strong, durable, and an excellent deterrent. Modern steel doors also come in beautiful designs that can look just like wood. |
| Wood | High | A solid wood door is naturally tough and resistant to impact. It offers a classic, beautiful look and provides excellent security. |
| Fiberglass | Low | While some fiberglass doors look nice, the thinner panels can be prone to cracking or breaking under force. We find they often need to be fully replaced after damage. |
Investing in a quality material isn’t about spending more money; it’s about the long-term safety and peace of mind that comes from knowing your home is secure. It’s a choice for durability and a lasting solution.
Simple Habits for a Safer Home
Beyond the door itself, a few simple habits can make a world of difference. In my police days, I saw that the most common security mistakes were often the easiest to fix.
• Always Close the Door: It sounds obvious, but we all get busy. An open garage door—even just a crack—is an open invitation. Always make sure the door is fully closed and secured, day and night.
• Keep Your Opener Secure:Treat your garage door opener remote like a house key. Avoid leaving it clipped to your visor in plain sight. A smart garage door opener is a great upgrade, as it allows you to check if your door is open and close it from anywhere using your phone.
• Light It Up: A well-lit exterior is a great deterrent. Motion-activated floodlights are a simple and effective way to discourage anyone from approaching your garage at night.
