Common Emergency Garage Door Problems We Fix

Broken Springs

broken garage door spring

Garage door springs are under tremendous tension and can snap without warning, making your door impossible to open manually or with your opener. This is one of the most common emergency garage door repair calls we receive. Our technicians carry a wide variety of replacement springs to get your door operational quickly.

Snapped Cables

A snapped garage door cable.

Cables work in tandem with springs to lift and lower your door safely. When cables break, your door may become dangerously unbalanced or completely immobile.

Our emergency garage door repair service includes immediate cable replacement to restore safe operation.

Off-Track Doors

A garage door which is off of its tracks.

When garage doors come off their tracks, they can create dangerous situations and leave your home vulnerable.

Our emergency garage door repair technicians can quickly realign your door, repair damaged tracks, and ensure all components are functioning properly.

Malfunctioning Openers

A malfunctioning garage door opener with fake lightning bolts coming out of it.

When your garage door opener fails, leaving you locked in or out of your garage, our emergency garage door repair technicians can diagnose and repair the issue promptly.

We service all major brands including LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and more.

Sensor Failures

A garage door sensor.

Modern garage doors rely on safety sensors to prevent closing on objects, pets, or people. When these sensors malfunction, your door may refuse to close, leaving your home exposed. Our emergency garage door repair includes sensor realignment, replacement, and testing.

Sudden Door Collapse

One garage door has collapsed onto the ground.

If your garage door has partially collapsed or is hanging precariously, do not attempt to fix it yourself. This extremely dangerous situation requires immediate professional emergency garage door repair. Our team will secure the area and safely repair or replace the damaged components.

Why Emergency Garage Door Repair Shouldn't Be DIY

While it might be tempting to attempt emergency repairs yourself, garage door systems are complex and potentially dangerous. Springs are under extreme tension, doors are heavy (often weighing 200+ pounds), and improper repairs can lead to serious injury or further damage.

Our professional emergency garage door repair technicians have:

  • Specialized training and certification
  • Proper tools and safety equipment
  • Extensive experience with all door types
  • Access to quality replacement parts
  • Insurance coverage for peace of mind

Super happy with Metro, Garage Door… Randy and his son do incredible work. Helped us pick out a design and the perfect door. Made it super easy and convenient. As you can see from the photos, the Brand new black garage door with windows really makes the house pop… Would highly recommend them to anyone.
Response from the owner:Hi Neil! Thanks for the review. Your garage door looks fantastic on your house, great choice. Thanks Again Randy & Kyle
The staff at this business are great! I called another garage door service company that my neighbor had used and they wanted to charge me $140 during the week or $250 on the weekend to come out and give a quote. I find that ridiculous if you're trying to earn somebody's business. This company was more than happy to come out the next day and meet and listen to what my needs were. We decided to have them get us all new equipment to include a garage door opener, springs, track, and insulated door. Based on my schedule it was installed the following week. I've had great compliments on my new garage door. I love the new convenience and security options on the LiftMaster series of openers.
Response from the owner:Thank you Michael. It was great working with you. Thsnk you for the business. Randy & Kyle.
Some really great people and really great service! I highly recommend to anyone needing quality garage door repair!
Response from the owner:Hi Parker! Thank you so much for the business and the kind words on the review. I really enjoy doing jobs for new people and working with them on their garage door problems. Thank You Again.

Common Problems & Solutions

What should I do if my garage door spring breaks? If your garage door spring breaks:

Do not attempt to open or close the door using the opener
Keep family members and pets away from the door
Call our emergency service line at (303) 988-4801 immediately
If you must use the door, only do so manually with extreme caution and with adequate help, as the door will be much heavier without functioning springs
Never attempt to repair or replace springs yourself, as they are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury

Our technicians carry a wide variety of replacement springs and can restore your door's functionality quickly and safely.

My garage door is stuck in the open position - what should I do?If your garage door is stuck open:

Do not force the door closed or attempt to disconnect the opener while the door is raised
Ensure nothing is blocking the safety sensors
Check if the manual release cord has been pulled
Call our emergency service line at (303) 988-4801
If you need to secure your home temporarily, consider parking a vehicle in front of the open door or having someone stay at the property until our technician arrives
Never attempt to force the door down as this could cause the door to fall suddenly
Our emergency technicians can quickly diagnose the issue and safely restore your door's operation, securing your home.

My garage door is off its tracks - is this an emergency?Yes, a garage door off its tracks is definitely considered an emergency. This situation creates a significant safety hazard as the door could fall unexpectedly, causing injury or property damage. Additionally, a door off its tracks cannot function properly, leaving your home vulnerable. You should:

Stop using the door immediately
Keep everyone away from the door
Do not attempt to force the door back onto the tracks
Call our emergency service line at (303) 988-4801 right away
Our technicians are equipped to quickly realign your door, repair any damaged tracks, and ensure all components are functioning properly.

Why won't my garage door close completely? There are several common reasons why a garage door won't close completely:

Safety sensor misalignment or obstruction - check if anything is blocking the sensors or if they're dirty/misaligned
Track obstructions - inspect for objects caught in the track
Limit switch needs adjustment - the close limit setting may need recalibration
Damaged rollers or hinges - worn components can prevent proper closing
Spring issues - improper tension can affect door movement
Bent tracks - even slight damage can prevent complete closing
For safety reasons, we recommend calling our professionals to diagnose and fix the issue rather than attempting repairs yourself, especially if the door is closing partially and then reversing.

What causes garage door cables to snap?Garage door cables can snap due to:

Normal wear and tear over time
Improper installation or incorrect cable size
Rust and corrosion, especially in humid environments
Sudden impact or force on the door
Imbalanced door putting extra strain on one cable
Broken springs causing cables to absorb excessive tension
Debris in tracks creating resistance and strain
Cable replacement should always be performed by professionals due to the high tension involved and the risk of injury. Our emergency technicians carry replacement cables for all door types and can quickly restore safe operation.

Why is my garage door making loud noises?Loud noises from your garage door often indicate developing problems that could lead to emergency situations if not addressed. Common causes include:

Grinding sounds - typically indicate worn rollers or bearings
Popping or banging - often signal broken springs or cables
Squeaking or squealing - usually due to lack of lubrication
Rattling - may indicate loose hardware or components
Scraping - could mean misaligned tracks or damaged panels
Straining motor sounds - might indicate opener problems or door balance issues
If you notice new or unusual noises, it's best to have your door inspected promptly before a minor issue becomes an emergency repair. Our technicians can diagnose the specific cause and provide appropriate solutions.

What should I do if my garage door opener stops working? If your garage door opener stops working:

Check if there's a power outage or if the opener is unplugged
Verify that the motor unit lights turn on; if not, check the circuit breaker
Test the remote batteries and try the wall button
Check for obstructions in the door's path or misaligned safety sensors
Try the emergency release cord to operate the door manually
If these steps don't resolve the issue, call our service line at (303) 988-4801
Our technicians service all major opener brands including LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and more. We can quickly diagnose and repair the issue or recommend replacement if necessary.

Safety & Security Concerns

Is it safe to use my garage door if it's making unusual noises? No, it's generally not safe to continue using a garage door that's making unusual noises. These sounds often indicate developing problems that could lead to component failure, which may result in property damage or personal injury. Specific concerns include:

Popping sounds may indicate a spring about to break
Grinding could mean the door is about to come off its tracks
Straining sounds might precede complete opener failure
We recommend discontinuing use and calling for professional inspection immediately. Continuing to operate a malfunctioning door can transform a simple repair into a more expensive emergency situation.

What safety precautions should I take if my garage door malfunctions? If your garage door malfunctions, follow these safety precautions:

Stop using the door immediately to prevent further damage
Keep children and pets away from the door
Disconnect the opener by pulling the emergency release cord (only if the door is in the closed position)
Do not attempt to force the door open or closed
Secure any valuables if the door cannot be properly closed
Call our emergency service line at (303) 988-4801
Never attempt to adjust or repair springs, cables, or other high-tension components
Your safety is our priority, and our professional technicians are trained to handle garage door emergencies safely and efficiently.

Can I manually open my garage door if the opener fails?Yes, you can manually open most garage doors if the opener fails, but you must follow proper procedure:

Only attempt this when the door is fully closed
Disconnect the opener by pulling the emergency release cord (usually a red handle hanging from the opener trolley)
Once disconnected, lift the door manually - be prepared, as it may be heavier than expected
If the door feels extremely heavy or unbalanced, stop immediately and call for professional help
To reconnect the opener, pull the release cord toward the door (away from the motor) while moving the door until you hear the trolley reconnect
Important: Never disconnect the opener while the door is open, as this could cause the door to fall rapidly, creating a serious safety hazard.

How can I secure my home if my garage door won't close properly? If your garage door won't close properly and you're waiting for emergency repair, here are temporary security measures:

Park a vehicle directly in front of the door to block access
Use a padlock or C-clamp on the door tracks just above a roller to prevent the door from being opened further
Place a ladder or other large object against the door from the inside to prevent it from being pushed open
Consider using a temporary alarm or motion sensor near the door
If possible, have someone stay at the home until repairs can be made
Remove garage door openers from vehicles parked outside
Secure the door between the garage and your home's interior
Our emergency technicians prioritize calls where security is compromised and will work to restore your door's functionality as quickly as possible.
